Chapter 150 The Dagger Has Been Found
Chapter 150 The Dagger Has Been Found
Xia Lanyue and Dai You arrived at the second house in East Third Alley.
The houses here are all in rows, made of brick, and divided into courtyards. The courtyards are not very big, but they look neat and tidy.
Xia Lanyue knew no one was in the courtyard, but she still called out symbolically, "Is anyone home?"
Dai You bypassed Xia Lanyue and pushed the door open to enter.
Xia Lanyue paused for a moment, then quickly followed.
The courtyard has been tidied up compared to before. Although there is not much stuff in the courtyard, it is much cleaner and has a more lived-in feel.
Dai You walked around the house next to the east side.
The room had very little furniture, just a bed and a wardrobe, but the bedding was all new, so it must have been recently purchased.
Dai You walked out of the room and said to Xia Lanyue, "Ayue, you can stay in this room."
Xia Lanyue glanced at the house furthest from the main house and nodded.
Then, Dai You walked to the main house door and pushed it open to go inside.
"Hey, this looks like Xia Yao's room. He's not here, so let's not go in," Xia Lanyue quickly said to stop them.
Dai You didn't say anything, nor did he pay any attention to Xia Lanyue, and walked straight in.
Xia Lanyue knew she couldn't stop him, so she simply gave up.
Not long after, Dai You came out of the house, holding a dagger in his hand.
Xia Lanyue was stunned. The dagger in front of her was the one Dai You had given her, the one she had lost while fighting with Acheng!
"How did it end up here?" Xia Lanyue asked.
Dai You pointed to Xia Yao's house, "I took it from his house."
"You went through his things?!" Xia Lanyue said in disbelief.
Dai You remained calm as he looked down at Xia Lanyue. "Shouldn't you be curious about why he has this dagger?"
Actually, Xia Lanyue already understood when she saw the dagger. It must have been picked up by Acheng and given to Xia Yao, but Dai You was unaware that Acheng was a thug. She couldn't let Dai You know, fearing he might overreact and cause trouble. "Yeah, why does he have this dagger?" Xia Lanyue pretended not to know.
"I remember you said it was lost during a fight with thugs," Dai You said, his words sounding both like a question and a statement. "Could it be that they hired someone to do it..."
"No!" Xia Lanyue denied decisively. She couldn't let them be suspected, otherwise it would be difficult to explain later. "Because... I don't remember when I lost this dagger. I'm not used to carrying it with me, so... I only looked for it when I needed it and found it wasn't there. But, I can't be sure if I lost it at that time. It's very likely that I didn't bring it with me."
Dai You seemed to understand something and sighed, "You didn't lose it, but it's with him. It seems you gave it to him." Dai You's expression was not good. "A-Yue, this dagger was a gift from me. How could you give it to someone else?"
Xia Lanyue quickly took the dagger from his hand. "I didn't give it to him. I... Oh dear, it was my fault. I didn't keep it safe. I apologize. I will keep it safe from now on."
Dai You looked disappointed, but he didn't press the matter. Perhaps he felt that there was no point in asking, so he nodded.
Xia Lanyue knew that Dai You must think that she had given away the dagger voluntarily. She thought about it and decided that she had to tell Xia Yao about it so that he wouldn't let it slip.
In the evening, Xia Yao returned home, carrying wine and looking travel-worn.
In the courtyard, Dai You was chopping wood and Xia Lanyue was setting out the bowls and chopsticks.
Xia Yao smiled involuntarily when he saw the courtyard filled with the aroma of cooking. "You've come."
Xia Lanyue nodded. "Let's wash our hands and eat."
Xia Yao sat at the table, looking at the food on it. "A-Yue's cooking is really good. I wish I could eat A-Yue's cooking every day."
Xia Lanyue smiled and continued to pour drinks for everyone.
The three of them raised their glasses together and drank the wine.
"I'm so happy to see you all here again," Xia Yao said happily.
Dai You kept a straight face the whole time.
Xia Yao looked at Dai You, who had a displeased expression, and asked, "Brother-in-law, is there anything you're not satisfied with here? If so, I'll try my best to fix it."
“Since you call me brother-in-law, then I will address you as brother-in-law,” Dai You said with a fake smile.
Xia Yao seemed to realize that Dai You wanted to make things difficult for him, but since he had already spoken, he couldn't take it back, so he could only nod in agreement.
“The courtyard is too small, and the house is also small. It’s cramped to live here,” Dai You said.
Xia Yao nodded, "Then my brother-in-law and A-Yue will have to make do for now. We'll get a bigger one when we have more money."
“There’s no chimney in this kitchen, and when A-Yue cooks, her eyes water from the fumes,” Dai You said.
Xia Yao glanced at the kitchen. He couldn't cook and didn't know these details. "I'll find someone to do it tomorrow."
“My sister has never done these kinds of rough and tiring jobs before. Her hands are used for embroidery, and she doesn’t know how to do housework. It’s fine for her to cook occasionally, but it can’t go on like this. We need to hire a maid to take care of her,” Dai You said.
Seeing that Dai You's words were becoming increasingly outrageous, Xia Lanyue spoke up to remind him, "Dai You."
Dai You ignored Xia Lanyue and continued talking to Xia Yao, "Look, A-Yue's room is next to the courtyard gate. If a thief comes, she will be the most unsafe." Dai You pointed to the room next to her and said, "There are also rat holes in the room. She is timid and afraid of those things."
Xia Yao looked around the room. "Then what does my brother-in-law think we should do?"
"Give her your room," Dai You said bluntly.
Xia Lanyue was surprised. Dai You in front of her was a completely different person, eloquent and articulate. However, everything he said was for her sake, and he really seemed to be acting like an "older brother from her maternal family".
Xia Yao was speechless after Dai You's words and looked to Xia Lanyue for help.
Xia Lanyue looked at Dai You, "It's okay for me, I can stay anywhere."
“Of course not. If Father knew that his daughter was going to marry into such a poor family, he would be heartbroken,” Dai You said, looking at Xia Lanyue.
Xia Lanyue's lips twitched slightly, but she didn't reply.
Xia Yao, who is usually very talkative, was like a mute today, only keeping his head down and eating.
After the meal, Xia Yao, who had never washed dishes before, took the initiative to clean up the dishes after glancing at Dai You's eyes, and then went to the kitchen to wash them.
Xia Lanyue squatted down next to Xia Yao, looking at him with a smile.
"What's wrong with Dai You today? Why is he so talkative?" Xia Yao asked helplessly.
Xia Lanyue couldn't stop laughing.
"I understand, you taught him," Xia Yao said, looking at Xia Yao.
Xia Lanyue shook her head. "How could I dare to teach him? But I've never seen him like this before."
Xia Yao glanced into the courtyard but didn't see Dai You. "Where is he?"
"Going to fetch water," Xia Lanyue took the opportunity to ask him, "Besides knowing my name, what else do you know?"
Xia Yao smiled and said, "You really like money, you keep talking about money."
Xia Lanyue smiled. It sounded like what she would say, but it wasn't what she wanted to hear. "What else did I say?"
"What else did he say? Oh, he said he liked me," Xia Yao said with a smug look.
Xia Lanyue pursed her lips, not believing that. Then, she changed the subject, "Let's talk about you. I don't even know your name."
This time, Xia Yao didn't keep her in suspense any longer and readily told Xia Lanyue about his situation.
