Chapter 537 - 538 A Group of Wolverines [First Update]
To test if Wu Tian was qualified to receive the legacy of the Heavenly Gods, the Ginseng Fruit Tree caused a resurgence of Spiritual Energy on Earth. For a time, the energy on the surface grew even stronger than that of the world below. This event also sparked a wave of unprecedented inspiration among scientists and biologists, transforming the modern world into something resembling a city from Marvel comics.
In the United States of America, a researcher developed an "Iron Man" suit. Biologists invented a serum that could transform people into Beastmen. Historians, collaborating with other scientists, even managed to grasp a fraction of dimensional secrets and create a time machine.
Now, Wu Tian wanted to examine this time machine. He hoped that by studying it, he could unravel the mysteries of time and space. This would allow him to break through the Void at will and return directly to the Immortal Emperor Realm, rather than having to traverse the All Heavens one by one.
Wu Tian, of course, was aware that the resurgence of Spiritual Energy was causing miraculous events to pop up everywhere. Some people suddenly awakened special abilities, just like Mutants. Scientists, struck by flashes of Spiritual Light, became like their comic book counterparts, creating all sorts of marvels. The nations of the world were overjoyed, as their collective power advanced by leaps and bounds, as if they had obtained technology from the future.
What they didn’t know was that this miracle would only last for one month. After that, regardless of whether Wu Tian passed the Ginseng Fruit Tree’s test, its influence would vanish. The resurgent Spiritual Energy would dissipate. The scientists’ newfound inspiration would fade. Those who had suddenly gained powers like Mutants would lose them. And all the fantastic inventions, deprived of the Spiritual Energy that fueled them, would cease to function.
Only Wu Tian knew this.
The other nations remained oblivious, celebrating what they believed was their mastery of hyper-advanced technology. They thought they no longer needed to fear the Martial God of Dragon Country.
Wu Tian was determined to get his hands on that time machine. Carrying the small child, he paid his bill and used his Spiritual Sense to locate Professor Zheng and Professor Li before immediately setting off in their direction.
The time machine would only be operational during the one-month period of Wu Tian’s test. After that, its fuel—Spiritual Energy—would disappear. By then, the machine would be nothing more than a pile of scrap metal. As for when humanity might build another one, that was anyone’s guess. The world was currently rich with Spiritual Energy, but besides Wu Tian, who knew this windfall was temporary?
Countless Martial Practitioners believed the heavens were smiling upon them, thinking they could now rely on this abundant Spiritual Energy to pursue their cultivation for a lifetime and live for centuries.
Wu Tian had only been trailing the professors for a short time when he heard the sounds of a struggle up ahead. Looking over, he saw Professor Zheng and Professor Li surrounded by a group of thirty men. The two professors looked frantic; they were clearly outmatched.
That makes sense, Wu Tian thought. The thirty individuals radiated a peculiar energy. It wasn’t Inner Strength, Yuan Force, or immortal power. It must be the so-called ’abilities.’
Like the Mutants from the movies, these thirty people had suddenly acquired powers thanks to the Spiritual Energy resurgence caused by the Ginseng Fruit Tree. Worse, they were all foreigners.
Thirty foreigners, bullying two Dragon Country professors on our own soil? Wu Tian knew he had to step in.
When the thirty men saw Wu Tian appear, they frowned. Who didn’t know the name Wu Tian?
The leader of the group spoke in fluent Dragon Country language, "Greetings, Martial God. We are friends visiting from abroad. We’re in the middle of some business here, so we would appreciate it if you’d take a detour. We will be sure to thank you for it in the future."
He sounded polite enough, but his frigid expression told a different story.
"Bidley," one of them chimed in, "now that we have these powers, perhaps we should ask the Martial God for some pointers and see where we stand."
"Besides," another added, "if word gets out about what we’re taking from Professors Zheng and Li, it could be trouble! We can’t let him just walk away!"
It was clear that their newfound abilities, combined with their nations’ recent technological boom, had filled them with an inflated sense of confidence.
Wu Tian chuckled, a spark of anger kindling in his heart.
Foreigners, here in Dragon Country... Even if you’re a dragon, you’d better lie low while you’re here. If you come in friendship, the people of Dragon Country will naturally show you respect. But if you come looking for trouble, don’t expect us to treat you as ’international friends.’
However, Wu Tian wasn’t the only one who was angry. Bidley, the leader of the thirty, was furious with his men. Idiots, he thought. He knew he couldn’t let Wu Tian just walk away, which was why he had tried to stall for time, hoping to catch him off guard. But now, thanks to his subordinates, their target was on high alert. An ambush was out of the question. What’s more, the Martial God wasn’t known for his mercy. If they didn’t strike first, he certainly would.
At this thought, all thirty men activated their powers simultaneously. They instantly gained Wolverine’s keen senses and the long-range vision of an eagle. They possessed incredible Self-Healing abilities, and of course, metal claws sprouted from their knuckles.
They charged toward Wu Tian. With their super Self-Healing, they felt just like Wolverine from the Marvel comics.
Wu Tian chuckled. He still only had a vague idea of what the Ginseng Fruit Tree wanted him to accomplish during this Spiritual Energy resurgence, and he had no time to ponder it now. Trouble had found him, and it needed to be dealt with.
As they lunged at him, Wu Tian vanished, reappearing directly in front of them in the blink of an eye. Startled, they all scrambled to raise their metal claws defensively.
"He’s so fast!"
"Terrifyingly fast!"
"He’s inhuman!"
The thirty "Wolverines" were stunned. They hadn’t expected Wu Tian to be this fast; it was practically Instantaneous Movement. It was obvious his power was far greater than theirs.
"We can’t beat the Martial God in a straight fight, but we have our super Self-Healing!"
"That’s right, we can heal from anything!"
Their confidence buoyed by their healing powers, they held their ground. But in the next moment, a single punch from Wu Tian showed them just how wrong they were.
With that one punch, all thirty "Wolverines" felt the special abilities within them shatter and completely vanish. They were sent flying backward, coughing up blood.
They now understood a simple truth: even with their awakened abilities, they were still nothing but trash in front of Wu Tian.
