Chapter 735 - 646: [Union Day] (2)
"Protest against the World Government, denounce the countless atrocities committed by the World Government!"
The ragged old man splayed his fingers wide, shouting at the top of his lungs.
He looked disheveled, his skin shriveled like bark, resembling a vagabond who emerged from nowhere compared to the formally dressed citizens on the square.
"Hold him down!"
The security guards, realizing the situation, rushed forward and pinned the old man to the ground.
"Wake up, children, take a good look, does this scene truly seem as glorious to you as you think?"
The old man’s dirty face was pressed against the cold ground, but his cloudy eyes seemed to regain a certain brightness, struggling more excitedly.
"All I see is endless war and ruins!"
In his eyes, Memorial Square was on fire, all structures consumed by flames, people danced in the fire, flailing and struggling!
It was not joyful cheers, but agonizing wails from being burned and eroded!
"That Secretary-General will not lead us into the Golden Era. On the contrary, she will bring this era to a halt, she will destroy everything here!"
"Shut up, you rebel!"
The incoming Law Enforcer grabbed the old man’s collar and viciously punched him in the face.
"Tell me, who sent you, which terror group sent you, Remnants of the Winged Feather? Or the Sundering’s remnants?"
"You all only see her radiance, but I see the Secretary-General’s obstinance, her unquestionable authority, her inherent arrogance and madness!"
"For slandering the Secretary-General like this, I declare, you have lost your rights as a citizen."
"You are not worthy of being illuminated by the glow of the ’Unified Charter.’" The Minister of Law Enforcement said harshly.
"Take him away!"
"Don’t forget, it is she who left the old world in ruins!"
The old man was soon taken away by the Law Enforcers, and the citizens merely considered his words the ravings of a lunatic, soon ceasing to discuss the matter.
At this moment, someone approached the side of the Minister of Law Enforcement, whispered something in his ear.
The Minister frowned at the words, seemingly finding them absurd.
"You say, someone plans to assassinate during the Secretary-General’s swearing-in?"
But he quickly realized the severity of the issue, an unprecedented sense of crisis arose from the depths of his heart, his brows furrowed tightly.
He dared not imagine the consequences if such a scene were to occur.
"Seal off the news, immediately notify all departments to increase vigilance, search for any suspicious figures within a two-kilometer radius of the square center, and take away anyone problematic."
"Understood!"
On the surface, the small episode ended, and under the glory-covered platform, currents surged silently.
A silver-haired judge appeared, her expression indifferent, under her gesture, several Law Enforcers quietly departed, leaving just her and a few prisoners in this prison.
The World Citizens Memorial Square, established atop the ruins of the Forbidden Water Prison. Half a century ago, that notable century trial took place here, yet concluded with a bizarre outcome.
Death row inmates all lowered their heads.
"Soon, you will be granted clemency, and as the last batch of death row inmates from the old world to be pardoned, you are allowed to meet the Secretary-General."
The death row inmates lowered their heads even further, hearing the words ’Secretary-General’, the image of a figure simultaneously appeared in their minds, and their shoulders began to tremble.
"Afterwards, I will ensure the well-being of your families, your children will assume new identities and enter the service of the World Government, and you."
"Future generations will remember you."
"Why us?" a tremulous voice asked from among the condemned.
"Judge, you clearly know, there’s nothing we can do."
"That will suffice," the judge’s voice was stern.
"These are the chips you possess."
Turning on her heel, the judge waved her hand, prompting the Law Enforcers outside the doors to enter, freeing the prisoners from their shackles and leading them to leave.
Watching the silhouettes of the departing prisoners, the judge’s gaze was grave, finally letting out a long, resigned sigh, as if accepting her fate, with a bitter smile.
"I am keenly aware that it is by the brilliance of the great Unified Charter shining upon the citizens that grants me this right, and I will strictly adhere and execute..."
At the highest platform of office, the golden-haired girl maintained a solemn expression, her deep eyes exuded calm, she stood straight as people, as usual, gazed hopefully at her figure.
In front of her stood a boulevard filled with flowers and applause, capturing an historic moment for people from around the world to record.
Behind her, there was no one left standing, and her shadow was cast by the brilliance onto every corner of the square.
"Routine check!"
A commotion stirred in the crowd, with the team of Law Enforcers forcefully moving through the throng, faces unprecedently stern, a young man who had been watching eagerly suddenly felt a force press him to the ground.
"What are you doing, let me go! I am a citizen protected by the Charter, you have no right to treat me this way!"
"Take him away!"
Soon after, another girl from a newspaper was pushed out of the crowd, her camera smashed on the ground.
"Check the contents in her camera."
Such scenes occurred in every part of Memorial Square, people jostling nervously, unsure of what was happening, while these Law Enforcers were on edge, any suspicious figure subjected to their interrogation, or even detention.
With a slight resistance, these people faced the violent suppression of the Law Enforcers. Until finally, the commotion caused was visible even to the golden-haired girl on the platform.
She acted as if she saw nothing, calmly continuing to recite the remaining words of her oath.
As the time of clemency drew nearer, these Law Enforcers’ nerves grew tauter, their gazes flitting anxiously over the mass of people, but just as the Minister of Law Enforcement was at the end of his rope, a communication came through, dispelling all his anxiety.
He sighed in relief, "Crisis averted, pull back."
Firelight flickered in the depths of a hidden cell.
The judge stood silently at the same spot.
The attendant responsible for handling the death row inmates came over, presenting a pistol to her.
"These death row inmates have renounced their rights to clemency."
The gun was warm, indicating it had been fired not long ago.
After a moment of silence, the judge chuckled softly.
"She never trusted me?"
"Even had you placed by my side for surveillance."
"It was of my own volition," the attendant responded.
"What, do you think you can stop me?" the judge raised an eyebrow, saying, "That’s about as absurd as the death row inmates plotting to assassinate the Secretary-General."
"No, the Secretary-General said that if you wished to leave, I need not prevent you, feel free to go."
"Is that so?" The judge took the gun.
Soon, the sound of a second gunshot echoed from the depths of the cell.
As the film concluded, the oath ceremony drew to a close. On the platform, the Secretary-General clenched her fist in front of her chest, her gaze intense.
"God is dead, and the new flowers of rebirth will fully bloom upon the ruins of the old world."
"I swear, this is our era, the era of humankind. I will spare no effort to reclaim what we once lost and to bring what we have never possessed."
"I swear, regardless of whether the future course of humanity is bright, whether the flame of civilization can continue, I will lead humanity through thorns and thickets, forward together."
"I am willing to dedicate my life to human civilization."
