Chapter 2391 - 2367: Unconventional Approach
Although he was quite ostentatious, Gao Yang wasn’t about to charge directly at the entrance of a military camp. He was bold but not foolish; being relaxed didn’t mean being reckless. After all, combat is dangerous and must be treated seriously.
When they were 500 meters from the gate, the glow night vision device captured everything clearly. Gao Yang raised his arm, signaling everyone to halt, and loudly said, "Sniper team, commence combat. Assault team, prepare."
Just then, Yuri, lacking confidence, asked, "Boss, which team am I supposed to be in? Am I part of the sniper team?"
Gao Yang looked at Yuri, who held the sniper grenade launcher awkwardly and gazed at him.
Today Yuri was not serving as Glolov’s assistant shooter because this battle lacked tough opponents. However, they would likely encounter enemy heavy firepower and fortifications, so it was time for Yuri to debut in his primary role.
The sniper grenade launcher from Huaxia had long been delivered, and Yuri was already well-trained. Satan, Peter, Frey, Cui Bo, Phoenix, and Gao Yang had all served as Yuri’s instructors, as the training needed to make Yuri a grenade launcher handler with sniper precision was naturally more complex.
After long training, Yuri was a bit nervous about his debut, especially since he didn’t know whether he belonged with Cui Bo and Phoenix as snipers, operated alongside Frey, the rocket launcher handler, or fought with Li Jinfang and the other assault team members.
The deployment of sniper grenade handlers was still being explored by the whole Satan team, and no one knew the best position for Yuri.
Gao Yang looked at the gate of the military camp. Indeed, the entrance had bunkers and machine gun positions, and quite a few at that.
"You’re with the sniper team!"
Gao Yang decided Yuri’s position, then immediately added, "Moreover, you will fire the first shot today—no, the first shell!"
Yuri seemed clumsy and silly. Although he was a distinguished Tatar warrior, he was a top student. The stark contrast between his appearance and character made Yuri always seem a bit comical.
For instance, now.
"You want me to fire the first shot?"
Yuri pointed at his own nose, chuckled, and then said, "There’s a lot of pressure, I’ll try to be accurate."
The large grenade launcher seemed tiny in the oversized hands of Yuri. After looking around and finding a suitable firing position, Yuri slowly crouched down.
Yuri’s large figure made his crouching look somewhat funny, but no one could actually laugh; instead, they were all rather tense.
A grenade launcher handler required proficiency in all sniper skills, which was genuinely difficult. You can’t just grab a sniper to fire sniper grenades, as the ballistics are completely different; it’s better to train a sniper grenade handler directly.
"Distance of 425 meters, target: the firing port of the bunker to the left of the camp entrance, wind speed per second, per second..."
"Gentle breeze. I said what you calculated, but do you have to mutter it out?"
Cui Bo impatiently reported the wind speed to Yuri, and found Yuri’s slow pace in calculating data and muttering amusing.
"Shut up; this is his first official combat."
Phoenix interrupted Cui Bo.
And Gao Yang laughed, "You muttered during your first shot too."
Cui Bo shouted, "Nonsense! I absolutely didn’t; I surely fired immediately!"
"But missed the shot."
"That was the gun’s problem!"
The atmosphere was relaxed, while Yuri was still slowly and slightly nervously calculating data. He didn’t use the data Cui Bo reported and chose his own speed measurement.
"Wind speed less than one meter per second, visibility good, um, everything looks good."
After muttering for a few sentences, Yuri spared his eyes from the rangefinder and wind gauge, placing them behind the night vision device on the left side of the sniper grenade launcher.
He aimed for quite a while, longer than Gao Yang typically shot off numerous rounds. They waited, waited until Gao Yang got a bit anxious.
Finally, with a swish, a flash of fire passed, followed shortly by a dim explosion from inside the distant bunker.
The explosion wasn’t very loud; Yuri raised his head and shouted, "Did I hit it? Did I hit it? Did I manage to hit it? Did I hit it?"
The vibration from the sniper grenade launch wasn’t minimal, causing Yuri’s night vision device to deviate from the target after firing. Instead of observing the damaged effect through the sight, he eagerly raised his head to ask others.
Gao Yang saw clearly; the explosion definitely happened inside the bunker, so Yuri accurately hit the target, firing the grenade into the bunker through its firing port.
"Direct hit, excellent, continue."
Phoenix was surely the one who spoke so succinctly, while Gao Yang loudly proclaimed, "Haha! Well done! Clumsy Bear, you hit it, you actually hit it! Awesome! The first shot—no! Your first shell hit spot on, impressive! Keep going!"
Cui Bo was somewhat bewildered, saying, "Alright, Clumsy Bear, you scored with a single shot; I thought it would take you a few rounds."
The camp was already in chaos; a few machine gun positions and bunkers at the entrance had started firing, but they lacked night vision equipment, likely did not even have any, so their counterattack amid the sudden attack was just aimless, chaotic shooting.
Yuri chuckled a few times, rubbed his hands, then picked up the sniper grenade launcher again.
This time, Yuri took much less time, because he didn’t need to measure the wind speed or atmosphere data again, nor did he need to measure the distance; he could directly aim and shoot.
With another swift motion, followed by waiting, a white flash appeared inside another bunker, silencing the bunker that had been firing moments ago.
"Direct hit again, good!"
The assault team members who were free even began applauding Yuri. As a new recruit, a rookie making his debut in his primary role, Yuri’s performance was indeed commendable.
Yuri beamed with joy; whether it was the luck of a rookie or otherwise, he hit four consecutive grenade rounds spot on.
Four grenades meant neutralizing four bunker positions, even at a distance of 400 meters; neither Gao Yang, Cui Bo, Phoenix, nor anyone in Satan could achieve such efficiency.
So Gao Yang was quite thrilled, truly thrilled. Yuri perfectly filled a firepower gap, combining sniper precision with grenade power seamlessly, much like Cui Bo and Tommy combined—a sheer pleasure!
Cui Bo suddenly sighed, then told Gao Yang, "Huaxia’s sniper rifle standards were never great, right?"
Gao Yang helplessly replied, "They’re not up to the technical level of some traditional powers."
Cui Bo gestured towards Yuri, sighing, "I think Huaxia might not plan to develop sniper rifles anymore. Look, they’ve started developing this—if it doesn’t hit, it’ll blast you, taking a path less traveled."
