Chapter 94 New Clothes
Chapter 94 New Clothes
For two consecutive days, neither A-Niu nor A-Cheng were seen at the dinner table. Xia Huifang said that A-Niu had recently gone back home because of a blind date, and A-Cheng had been staying in the fields these past few days, so he hadn't come back.
"Pangao, where are the clothes you changed out of these past few days? I haven't seen them. Bring them out, I'll wash them for you when I have time," Xia Huifang said to Xia Yao.
“No need, Mother,” Xia Yao said.
"What do you mean 'not needed' anymore?" Xia Huifang didn't understand what he meant. Indeed, what he said was as good as saying nothing at all.
Xia Yao thought for a moment and said, "I... washed it myself and put it away."
"Hehe, when did you..." Xia Huifang said, but she clearly didn't believe it.
Indeed, it's strange that Xia Yao, who usually doesn't do any laundry or cooking, would suddenly say something like that.
However, Xia Huifang didn't press the matter further. Perhaps there were too many people around, and she was afraid of asking some strange questions. So she simply let it go, since it was just a piece of clothing anyway.
Xia Lanyue listened quietly to their conversation, only looking down at the rice in her bowl, without saying a word.
After breakfast, everyone went about their own business, but Xia Yao was still standing outside the gate waiting for his students.
Xia Lanyue passed by him several times, wanting to speak to him, but his cold demeanor deterred her each time. Finally, unable to contain herself any longer, she stepped forward.
"How is your injury?" Xia Lanyue asked casually.
"Hmm...it still hurts a little," Xia Yao replied.
"This medicine is for your wound," Xia Lanyue said, handing the bottle of medicine Dai You had given her to Xia Yao, adding, "This was given to me by Doctor Zhang. I've tried it myself; it's good medicine."
"How's your injury?" Xia Yao asked casually as he took the medicine.
The sudden concern made Xia Lanyue very happy, but she didn't dare to show it. She just said softly, "I'm much better." After saying that, she turned back to the courtyard. She was afraid that if she didn't leave soon, she wouldn't be able to suppress her laughter.
Xia Lanyue jogged back into the house, patted her face to clear her head, and said, "Xia Lanyue, Xia Lanyue, have you forgotten how he pretended not to see you?! Look at you, so pathetic! Calm down, calm down!"
Just then, Dai You's voice came from the doorway. He had returned from washing dishes by the river and was calling to Xia Lanyue, "Ayue, let's go."
"Coming!" Xia Lanyue straightened her clothes and ran out.
At the end of the town street, Xia Lanyue set up her stall as usual. Today, there were not many pedestrians on the street, and they came and went in a hurry. It was not as lively as usual. She wondered if it was because the weather was getting hotter.
After selling two baskets of rice cakes, Xia Lanyue packed up her stall early. While Dai You was still at work, she went to the clothing shop in town by herself.
The shop has a wide variety of clothing, both men's and women's.
Since arriving here, Xia Lanyue hasn't bought herself any new clothes. Now that she has some money, she feels she should buy a dress she likes.
Xia Lanyue chose her dress and then looked at the men's clothes. It was her first time seeing "ancient" clothing, and she really didn't understand it. Fortunately, the shopkeeper's enthusiastic explanation helped Xia Lanyue gain some understanding of the clothes.
Finally, Xia Lanyue paid the money and left the shop.
Xia Lanyue went to Wang Xiang's shop, put the clothes she bought in the backyard, and then went to find Dai You.
At this moment, Dai You was decocting medicine in the backyard. During his stay, Dai You had worked diligently and without shirking his duties, which had won the favor of Physician Zhang, who now wished he could stay and work as a long-term laborer.
Seeing Dai You's serious expression, Xia Lanyue wanted to tease him. She planned to sneak up behind him, shout in his ear to scare him, and see his reaction.
So she tiptoed over, but as soon as she got close, before she could even speak, Dai You threw a punch that landed squarely on Xia Lanyue's forehead. It was as if he had been expecting this all along.
"Ah!" Xia Lanyue clutched her head and took two steps back, tripping on the floor tiles before falling to her bottom.
"Oh my, it's you!" Dai You turned around upon hearing the voice, saw it was her, and quickly came over to help her up.
Dai You already had some martial arts skills, so this punch didn't seem to have much force on him, but for Xia Lanyue, it felt like hitting a wall, and it hurt terribly.
Xia Lanyue stood up from the ground, still feeling a little dizzy.
"Why are you here so early today?" Dai You was surprised by her appearance.
"There weren't many people on the street today. I sold two baskets and came back," Xia Lanyue said, then she let go of her hand. "Look at my forehead, is it swollen?"
Dai You smiled, glanced at her forehead, and gently tapped it again.
"Oh dear," Xia Lanyue exclaimed, not expecting him to tease her like that.
"I didn't use any force."
"Um... I need to talk to you about something," Xia Lanyue said tentatively, seeing that he was in a good mood. "I'd like to go back first today."
"No," Dai You replied without hesitation.
"why?"
"Because it's not safe lately, I'm worried about leaving you alone."
"But……"
“There are no ‘buts’, no means no,” Dai You said, leaving her no room for negotiation.
"Okay, then... you go ahead and do your thing, I'll go out for a bit," Xia Lanyue turned to leave.
"Wait, just wait here for me to finish work," Dai You said, as if he had seen through her little scheme, and stopped her.
"I'm going to sit at Wang Xiang's shop for a while and chat with Jiang Di. Come find me here later," Xia Lanyue said.
"Can't you just stay here and chat with me for a while? What are you talking about with other men?" Dai You's face fell.
“I asked him something, and he knows everything about the people in this town, no, the people and things in the surrounding villages. He’s very well-informed,” Xia Lanyue said, pointing to the earthenware pot on the ground where the medicine was being decocted. “Oh dear, is it burnt?! Quickly check this medicine.”
Dai You turned around in a panic to check, and was relieved to see that the medicine hadn't burned. By the time he turned around again, Xia Lanyue had already disappeared.
Xia Lanyue jogged all the way to Wang Xiang's shop. There weren't many pedestrians on the street today, and their shop didn't have many customers either.
When Abei saw her, he greeted her warmly and loudly, "Miss Dai, you've come!"
"Hey, why are you shouting so loudly? I'm not deaf," Xia Lanyue glanced at Abei, wondering what he was up to now.
The young man scratched his head and grinned foolishly, saying nothing.
Xia Lanyue ignored him and went straight to the backyard.
Xia Lanyue picked up her clothes and bundle and prepared to leave.
At that moment, the door opened, and Jiang Di came out.
"Oh dear, you scared me half to death! What brings you here again today?!" Xia Lanyue was quite surprised to see Jiang Di appear again.
"Tsk, Dai Xiyue, do you not want to see me now?"
"Oh dear, that's not what I meant. I was just surprised. You used to be so busy, why aren't you busy now? Is business not going well?" Xia Lanyue said.
"How could that be? I've just... not been too busy lately," Jiang Di said, noticing the bundle in Xia Lanyue's hand. "What are you carrying?"
"These are my clothes," Xia Lanyue said, feeling guilty about the clothes. She then clutched the bundle to her chest, making her look rather awkward to anyone who saw her like that.
Jiang Di couldn't help but frown.
