Chapter 162 Xia Huifang's Mischief
Chapter 162 Xia Huifang's Mischief
In the courtyard, Dai You was chopping firewood, while Xia Lanyue was cooking in the kitchen.
Xia Yao greeted Dai You, "Brother-in-law, thank you for your trouble."
Dai You glanced coldly at Xia Yao, then at A Cheng beside him, and said nothing.
"Oh, you've got quite a temper," Acheng said sarcastically.
Xia Yao nudged A-Cheng with his elbow, "How can you talk like that?! After A-Yue and I get married, we'll all be relatives. Yao, watch your manners."
Acheng was unconvinced and turned his face away.
Hearing the noise, Xia Lanyue peeked out from the kitchen, but the moment she saw Acheng, her face filled with embarrassment. She hadn't expected to see Acheng so soon, and she wasn't mentally prepared to face him.
Seeing Xia Lanyue's unnatural expression, Xia Yao walked to the door and pulled Xia Lanyue into the kitchen. "A-Yue, look what A-Cheng brought?" Xia Yao held up the jar and waved it in front of Xia Lanyue's eyes.
"Is this the jar of fermented bean curd I made?" Xia Lanyue felt that the jar looked familiar.
"Yes, it seems you haven't forgotten. Would you like to try some?" Xia Yao handed her the jar.
Xia Lanyue took it, then picked up a few pieces and put them in her bowl. She tried it, and it tasted good! It was a success!
Xia Lanyue was very happy. She picked up a small piece and brought it to Xia Yao's lips, saying, "You should try some too."
After tasting it, Xia Yao nodded and said, "It tastes very similar. It would be better if it had chili peppers." He then smiled.
"Hmm," Xia Lanyue responded, then her smile faded. "Why is A-Cheng here?"
“He came to visit his mother, so I let him have a meal at home,” Xia Yao said, handing the roast chicken he had brought back to Xia Lanyue. He asked cautiously, “Lanyue, you don’t mind, do you?”
Xia Lanyue lowered her head and remained silent. She felt awkward, but dared not say anything.
“I know that an apology won’t change the shadow it has cast on you, but we will inevitably have to see him in the future. I hope you can try to get along with him peacefully,” Xia Yao said.
Xia Lanyue felt a little disappointed as she watched Xia Yao calmly say these words. "You don't seem to mind at all."
Xia Yao looked helpless. "That was my own mistake. I tacitly approved of him doing it, so how can I blame A-Cheng now? But thankfully you're alright, so I have no choice but to accept it. A-Yue, try to let it go too."
Hearing these words, Xia Lanyue felt a mix of emotions. She found Xia Yao's emotions, including his feelings for her, to be terrifyingly rational. Seeing him calmly say these words, she wondered if he had truly fallen for her.
Seeing Xia Lanyue lost in thought, Xia Yao asked softly, "A-Yue?"
"I understand," Xia Lanyue smiled.
“I knew it, A-Yue is sensible,” Xia Yao said, taking Xia Lanyue’s hand. “Don’t let him affect your mood. He left after he finished eating.”
"Hmm," Xia Lanyue said, looking at the roast chicken on the cutting board.
“This guy is lucky to have fermented bean curd. He’s getting a good deal,” Xia Yao said.
Xia Lanyue smiled.
For dinner, the five of them sat down at one table, a rare occurrence.
However, the atmosphere was extremely awkward.
No one spoke, nor did anyone touch their chopsticks.
Xia Yao's eyes darted across the faces of the group, observing each person's expression before cautiously speaking, "Mother, Cheng was worried about you and came to see you. We're all together today, so let's have a happy dinner."
Xia Huifang rolled her eyes. "Acheng, you've come at the right time. Take me back with you. I don't want to stay here anymore."
Xia Yao frowned. "Mother, what are you saying?"
Xia Huifang wasn't one to swallow her anger. "I've been wronged, and I can't even speak up? Everyone says that once you have a wife, you forget your mother! You really have no conscience!"
"Mother, you've been taken care of by A-Yue these past few days, why are you saying this?" Xia Yao was a little unhappy.
"Take care of me wholeheartedly?!" Xia Huifang said, her lips pursed, and she began to sob. "My back was supposed to get better in two days, but now it's taking ten days. Whether she took care of me wholeheartedly or not, she knows best herself."
"You!" Xia Lanyue also lost her temper and was about to retort, but Xia Yao's look stopped her, and she swallowed her words.
Xia Yao said to Xia Huifang, "Mother, she did nothing wrong in taking care of you. You can't be so picky."
"Acheng, look, he's already scolding me. I really can't stay here any longer," Xia Huifang said to Acheng, pouting.
Acheng looked embarrassed, glancing at Xia Huifang and then at Xia Lanyue, caught in a dilemma. "Aunt, your health is important, don't be angry."
"I'm heartbroken," Xia Huifang said, tears streaming down her face. "My son sides with outsiders. What a failure I've become! Who can I rely on in the future?!"
As Xia Huifang spoke, whether it was acting or not, she suddenly stopped sobbing, covered her chest with one hand, closed her eyes, and fell backward.
Seeing this, Xia Yao quickly stepped forward to support her, "Mother, what's wrong?"
Acheng also rushed over, picked up Xia Huifang, and carried her into the house.
In the courtyard, only Xia Lanyue and Dai You remained, sitting awkwardly at the table.
Before long, Xia Lanyue heard Xia Huifang's cries and complaints coming from inside the house.
Although she couldn't hear the exact words spoken, Xia Lanyue knew they were all related to her.
Dai You looked at Xia Lanyue and couldn't help but ask, "Do you still want to stay?"
Xia Lanyue still wanted to stay. Although she didn't want to face Xia Huifang, having chosen Xia Yao, she had no choice but to confront her. She felt that Xia Yao could handle their relationship well.
Dai You looked at Xia Lanyue and sighed, "His mother doesn't like you. If you marry him, you won't have a good life."
"How do I know if I haven't tried it yet?" Xia Lanyue felt that as long as Xia Yao stood firmly on her side, she could tolerate it even if Xia Huifang didn't make things difficult for her.
"It's already like this before we're even married, do you really want to try something else?" Dai You frowned slightly. "If it's always like this in the future, can you still tolerate it?"
"Xia Yao will help me handle my relationship with her," Xia Lanyue said, lowering her head.
"Look at the situation today. Xia Huifang made a scene, and he couldn't do anything about it. Do you think Xia Yao has the ability to persuade Xia Huifang?"
Xia Lanyue nodded stubbornly. In her eyes, Dai You said all this simply to get her to leave with him. But he had no idea that besides liking Xia Yao, she had other reasons for staying, which she couldn't explain.
Since she chose Xia Yao, she should trust him.
Seeing that he couldn't persuade Xia Lanyue, Dai You sighed and stopped talking.
The two stopped speaking, and the sounds inside the room became exceptionally clear.
“What’s the use of raising a son? In the end, he’ll just be fooled by someone. Go away, I don’t want you to take care of me anymore~ Waaah,” Xia Huifang’s voice, choked with sobs, rang out once again.
However, Xia Lanyue never heard Xia Yao insist on speaking again.
Then, A-Cheng hurriedly ran out and headed outside the courtyard.
Then, Xia Yao came out of the house.
Xia Lanyue looked at his expression, which was full of helplessness, as if he wanted to say something to her.
Xia Yao walked to Xia Lanyue's side, took her hand, and said, "Ayue, come here, I have something I want to tell you."
Xia Lanyue's heart skipped a beat; she seemed to sense that Xia Yao was about to say something unpleasant.
