Chapter 122 Return to Xia Family
Chapter 122 Return to Xia Family
In the early morning, Xia Lanyue slowly opened her eyes, and she was suddenly shocked by the scene before her.
This room isn't the Jiang family's room! It's the Xia family's room where she always lived.
"This must be a dream," Xia Lanyue reassured herself as she closed her eyes again. When she opened them again, yes, she was in front of the Xia family's house, the one she lived in. She was back!
Xia Lanyue looked up at the window; it was just getting light.
Recalling what happened last night, she suddenly realized that sending her out must have been part of Jiang's long-planned scheme.
Jiang knew that Jiang Di would be away for a day, and the medicine Jiang gave her tasted a little different from usual, probably because it contained a sedative to prevent her from waking up during the trip.
"Hmph," Xia Lanyue sneered. Madam Jiang had gone to great lengths to prevent her from clinging to Jiang Di.
But what can she do now?! She's back in this den of wolves, and she still can't walk! Thinking of this, Xia Lanyue felt an unprecedented despair welling up inside her.
She tried to turn over, but it still hurt. She tried to lift her leg and accidentally bumped into the cabinet. A sharp pain shot through her, and she couldn't help but cry out, "Ah!"
Xia Lanyue quickly covered her mouth, afraid of disturbing others. She looked towards the window and waited for a while before feeling relieved when no one came. She tried to move her legs again.
Just then, she heard the door next door open, and Xia Yao walked in.
Xia Lanyue looked at Xia Yao nervously, barely daring to breathe. His sleepy-eyed appearance and the white cotton shirt and trousers he wore made it seem as if he had been woken up and rushed over.
Xia Yao didn't do anything strange; he just stood by Xia Lanyue's bedside with a cold face, looking down at her. "What's wrong with you?"
Xia Lanyue ignored her and just looked at him warily.
Xia Yao breathed a sigh of relief. "If there's nothing else, I'll head back."
Xia Lanyue withdrew her gaze, hummed in response, and then buried her face in her arms.
She couldn't see Xia Yao, but she could hear his footsteps as he left and the sound of the door closing.
Xia Lanyue breathed a sigh of relief, raised her head, and after confirming that he had left, tried to stand up again. However, she had overestimated her condition; even with one leg down, she was unable to stand up.
With no other option, she moved her legs back onto the bed. She didn't want anyone to see through her intentions when she was unable to run.
Not long after, Xia Huifang pushed open the door and entered. Seeing Xia Lanyue on the bed, she looked distressed and said, "Oh dear, what happened? How could Village Chief Zhao be so cruel? It breaks my heart."
Xia Lanyue stared blankly at Xia Huifang's face, inwardly thinking that if this were in her time, Xia Huifang's acting skills would have won an award.
Seeing Xia Lanyue's bewildered expression, Xia Huifang tenderly cupped her face in her hand, intending to comfort her. However, this action startled Xia Lanyue, causing her to tremble. Xia Huifang quickly withdrew her hand, exclaiming, "Oh dear, look how frightened the child! That Zhao village chief is truly inhuman. And Pang Gao—I've already scolded him, why doesn't he speak up for you?!"
Xia Lanyue's reaction made Xia Huifang feel that the Xia Lanyue in front of her seemed different from before, less cheerful and trusting. So, she tactfully said, "Ah Yue, you should rest well. I'm going to cook. I'll bring it to you in a bit," and then left.
Xia Lanyue couldn't help but wonder why Xia Huifang was still treating her the same way as before. What had Xia Yao told Xia Huifang about her leaving the Xia family? Was Xia Huifang acting? Or did she genuinely not know about her past conflict with Xia Yao? Did she know about Acheng's despicable behavior? Xia Lanyue had many questions. If Xia Yao hadn't told Xia Huifang, she would be somewhat relieved; at least Xia Huifang wouldn't betray her. She feared that the whole family harbored ill intentions, and then she would be finished.
Xia Lanyue looked at the food in front of her, hesitated for a long time, and finally ate it.
She didn't have many options right now; she couldn't just starve to death here. She was just gambling that Xia Huifang still had some kindness in her heart.
After eating, she kept a close eye on her body for any unusual symptoms. After a while, she felt nothing wrong, so she relaxed and lay on the bed playing with her hair.
Gradually, the sound of reading from the west room drifted over, and she knew that Xia Yao wouldn't come out easily.
Xia Lanyue decided to try walking; she wanted to leave this place, and for now, she could only rely on herself.
She first endured the pain in her legs and put both legs off the bed. Then, she tried to stand up while holding onto the bed, and then, still in pain, she took a few steps while holding onto the wall. Next, she tried to walk without holding on. At this point, the pain caused her to lose control of her direction, and she bumped into the door and fell to the ground.
She was in great pain, but she forced herself not to make a sound and tried to stand up and walk again. She repeated this process until she was finally able to walk without holding onto anything.
Suddenly, she seemed to hear the sound of children running and playing in the yard, so she didn't care about anything else and quickly climbed back into bed.
She was panting heavily when Xia Yao knocked on the door.
Before she could respond, Xia Yao pushed open the door.
Xia Lanyue looked up at Xia Yao with some surprise, then smiled and lowered her head.
Xia Yao looked at Xia Lanyue, whose face was covered in sweat, then at the open window, frowned, and asked, "Is A-Yue thirsty?"
"Ah? I'm not thirsty, thank you," Xia Lanyue didn't dare look at him, and lowered her head to lick her dry lips.
"Okay," Xia Yao said and went out. He came back a short while later, carrying a bowl of water. "Have some, it's too hot."
Xia Lanyue couldn't refuse the bowl of water, so she took it and gulped it down. But as soon as she finished, she regretted it and started to worry whether Xia Yao had put something in the water.
She smacked her lips, trying to detect any unusual smell in the water, but couldn't sense anything amiss.
Xia Yao thought she hadn't had enough to drink, so he turned around and gave her another bowl of water, which Xia Lanyue took and drank.
"Ah Yue has such a good personality, she doesn't hold grudges. She forgot so quickly that you made me so angry. Aren't you afraid I'll poison the water?" Xia Yao said sarcastically.
"Cough cough cough," Xia Lanyue was startled by these words, choked on water and coughed repeatedly, "You...poisoned me?! I knew it...cough cough cough..."
Xia Yao seemed satisfied with her reaction. "Heh, so that's what you think of me?" After saying that, Xia Yao shook his head and went out to teach the children.
After Xia Yao left, Xia Lanyue stopped coughing. She quickly took out the silver lock from her neck and put it in the water. She wanted to use this method to test for poison!
She remembered that's how it was always portrayed on TV: if it turns black, it's poisonous. If it were poisonous, she could quickly gag herself and spit it out. But after waiting a long time, the silver lock didn't change color. It seemed it wasn't poisonous; Xia Yao had just been joking.
Regardless, Xia Lanyue is no longer willing to easily trust Xia Yao and has decided to be more careful in everything she does, especially anything that goes through him.
After drinking the water, Xia Lanyue felt her energy return, so she got up and continued exercising.
She knew that if she wanted to leave this place now, she could only do so through her own efforts; she had no other choice.
