Chapter 129 The Educated Youth: Her Radiant Beauty
Chapter 129 The Educated Youth: Her Radiant Beauty
Wen Yan was shocked. Was her grip really that strong? The handprint was still there!
Not only did it not go down, it became swollen!
No, upon closer inspection, the palm print seemed to be facing the wrong direction.
Could he have slapped himself?
To confirm her suspicion, Wen Yan placed her hand on Shen Que's face and compared it; it really was him who had slapped himself.
Do you have any medicine to reduce swelling?
Wen Yan glanced at her slightly swollen cheek and asked.
"It's okay, it will go away on its own."
Shen Que didn't care at all. He was used to being rough, and this wasn't even considered an injury.
At the dinner table, Grandma Shen had just returned from feeding the chickens when she saw her grandson's swollen face. She was startled, thinking he had eaten something wrong.
"Grandma is fine. There were mosquitoes in the room just now, and I swatted them a little too hard."
"Really?" Grandma Shen was skeptical, but after seeing Wen Yan nod, she decided to believe it this time.
"Then we'll fumigate herb with some mugwort later. Xiaoyan's skin is delicate, so we don't want her to get bitten all over."
Shen Que nodded, and after finishing a few mouthfuls of porridge, he got up and went to cut mugwort with a sickle.
The scent of mugwort lingers for a long time; a faint fragrance still lingers in the room when you go to bed at night.
Wen Yan sighed as she lay in bed. She had to go to work again tomorrow. When would the days of working from the moment she opened her eyes ever end?
Life in the countryside was peaceful, especially after moving to a new place. Without a bunch of scheming roommates, Wen Yan couldn't be happier every day.
Aside from the work itself, it was truly exhausting.
Every day when I come home, my bones feel like they're about to fall apart, and I have absolutely no energy left.
It was also thanks to Grandma Shen who helped her wash the clothes she had changed out of.
Otherwise, she would have to take time to wash clothes by the river after work, which would be too much of a hassle.
"It will be better after this busy farming season is over, then we will all have a few days off."
Grandma Shen, with a look of heartache, put a piece of meat on Shen Que's and Wen Yan's plates: "Look at you two, you've both lost weight."
Have it?
Wen Yan touched her increasingly round face.
After arriving at the Shen family's home, the food improved dramatically. There was meat every few days, and the rice was still white rice, not the watery rice soup where you could count the grains.
Even the steamed cornbread is soft and fluffy, and doesn't irritate the throat at all.
She felt like she had gained weight.
After the meal, Wen Yan took the initiative to wash the dishes. Grandma Shen was thinking about her chicks, so after putting down the bowls, she went to prepare chicken feed.
Just as Wen Yan put the bowl into the warm water in the pot, Shen Que came in.
"Let me go."
He took the dishcloth from Wen Yan and started washing the dishes himself, just like he had been doing for the past few days.
"Shen Que, you are so virtuous."
Shen Que's ears turned red; it was the first time he had ever heard someone praise a man for being virtuous and good at managing a household.
Wen Yan moved a small stool and sat in front of the stove to watch him wash the dishes. Her slender fingers moved in the water, and the man's cold and hard face gradually softened in the dim candlelight.
The years were quiet for a while.
However, Wen Yan was not one to sit still, and she kept him chatting on and off.
Of course, most of the time she was talking and he was listening, occasionally humming in agreement.
"The book you wanted is in my room. I'll bring it to you in a bit."
Wen Yan paused in her eating of sunflower seeds, a look of incredulous joy spreading across her face: "How did you know I wanted it?"
"You mentioned it a few days ago."
Wen Yan thought about it and realized that she had indeed said something like that to him a few days ago. At the time, Shen Que was busy washing dishes, and she thought he hadn't heard her.
Wen Yan was very happy. She dropped the sunflower seed shells in her hand, took a few steps around the stove, hugged Shen Que's arm, and her eyes sparkled like they were filled with stars.
She said, "Shen Que, thank you so much."
"Ah."
The arms that were being held stiffened for a moment, but were quickly forced to relax.
He was unaccustomed to her occasional little acts of intimacy, yet secretly looked forward to them.
Wen Yan noticed it too, but instead of letting go, she mischievously tightened her grip.
"You all have to work tomorrow, so go to bed early."
Grandma Shen, leaning on her cane, was standing at the doorway, watching with unease the figure huddled close to the stove. She wondered:
"What are you doing?"
Wen Yan let go of Shen Que's hand in a flash, snatched the dishcloth from his hand, and pretended to wash the dishes.
Like a child caught red-handed.
Shen Que smiled slightly, then immediately straightened up, "We're washing the dishes."
"Do we need two people to wash the dishes?"
"She washes the dishes, I put them down; the dishes are too heavy for her to carry."
Grandma Shen was puzzled. How could she not be able to lift four or five bowls?
Wen Yan's face flushed, she quietly stepped on his foot, then glared at him.
Who said they couldn't lift a bowl?
Shen Que added, "I'm afraid she won't be able to carry it."
"You worry about nothing all day long. I, an old woman, could carry ten of those bowls by myself."
Grandma Shen muttered to herself as she walked away silently.
Wen Yan's face turned red, and she stepped on Shen Que's foot again, even mischievously grinding it.
Shen Que's expression remained unchanged. After putting down the bowl, he picked up a candle and shone it on Wen Yan as he went out.
The courtyard was much brighter than the kitchen; the unpolluted rural crescent moon shone like a small incandescent light bulb.
An unnamed insect chirped, adding to the rich smell of the night.
When Wen Yan came out of the shower, she saw several books on the floor at the door of her room. They were her previous college entrance examination textbooks, along with a small desk lamp.
Holding these small items, Wen Yan felt a warmth in her heart. She turned to look at Shen Que's dark room, where he was clearly asleep.
She closed the door and, by the dim light of the desk lamp, flipped through the textbook she already knew by heart, a faint smile playing on her lips.
That's really boring.
But it also happened to be something that was stuck in her heart.
This set of textbooks is quite hard to find. Due to the influence of the situation and printing issues, even the educated youth who had just been sent to the countryside only had a few scattered copies.
The entire educated youth settlement barely managed to gather a complete set, but Shen Que found it in just three days.
Wen Yan said thoughtfully, "He's hiding something from me."
"Sir, I can tell you," 233 said excitedly.
"Shh, some things are more fun to discover for yourself." Wen Yan put her index finger to her lips and smiled casually.
In an instant, she returned to her usual quiet and gentle demeanor.
She turned off the light, tossed and turned in bed for a while, but her mind became increasingly clear.
She simply sat up and happened to hear the sound of the door opening next door, so she threw off the thin blanket and got out of bed.
The sound of water being scooped came from outside the door, just as Wen Yan opened it.
Cool water was poured over the man's bare chest, the escaping water rushing down along the lines of his muscles.
Under the moonlight, the man's naked muscles were muscular yet not exaggerated, radiating a lustrous and full glow in the hazy moonlight.
My gaze drifted down, and there was a large, wet clump...
"boom!"
There was a loud slam of a door closing.
The sound of scooping water stopped abruptly.
Wen Yan leaned against the door, breathing softly, her eyes still flushed with shyness, her face burning hot.
She...she...she...she was peeping at Shen Que taking a shower!
Oops, no, Shen Que was actually taking a bath in the yard!
It wasn't really a bath, just a quick rinse.
The key point is that she actually peeked, and not only that, she made such a loud banging noise on the door.
Are they afraid Shen Que won't find out?!
Wen Yan held her breath as the distant footsteps grew closer, her heart pounding in her throat.
"Knock down."
"I slept!"
Silence is Cambridge tonight...
Wen Yan desperately covered her mouth, her eyes filled with despair. "You're so quick with your tongue! You think you're so good with words?!"
Shen Que, who was just a door away, turned red on the spot. He had only suspected it before, but now he was certain.
His dry Adam's apple bobbed repeatedly, his captivating dark eyes blending seamlessly with the thick night.
