Chapter 10 Departure
Chapter 10 Departure
Dmitry continued: "Alexei, machine gunner, is responsible for providing fire support for the squad."
After saying that, Alexei looked at Lu Ye and gave him a look. Lu Ye nodded at him.
Then, Dmitry pointed to a young soldier who looked to be only in his early twenties, with a somewhat immature face: "This is Peter, the assistant machine gunner. He hasn't been in the army for long, so his combat experience is a bit lacking, and he hasn't been in the squad for very long either. This time, he will mainly assist Alexei and be responsible for flanking fire support."
Peter quickly smiled at Lu Ye, revealing a set of white teeth, and said somewhat shyly, "Hello, Lu Ye, please guide me in the future."
"Let's look after each other." Lu Ye nodded politely, even though the other party was a novice, he couldn't let his guard down.
"This is Victor, our driver. He's in charge of driving the first of the three transport trucks and is also our navigator. He knows the terrain along the way and knows where there are hiding spots and where ambushes are likely," Dmitry said, pointing to a middle-aged man.
"Anton, the communications officer, is responsible for radio communication along the route, keeping in touch with the camp, and relaying the captain's instructions." A soldier wearing headphones looked up, waved to Lu Ye, and had a sly look on his face.
Finally, Dmitry pointed to a burly man nearly two meters tall and said, "This is Maxim, our squad's main melee fighter, and also the supply escort."
Maxim grinned, revealing a simple and honest expression.
At this point, the eight-man squad had been fully introduced, each with their own specific role and clear division of labor: Captain Dmitry, sniper Seryozha, sniper assistant Lu Ye, machine gunner Alexei, assistant machine gunner Peter, driver Viktor, communications officer Anton, and close combat specialist Maxim.
Dmitry cleared his throat, his tone becoming unusually serious: "Now I will explain the details of the mission. Our objective this time is to safely transport the supplies on the vehicle to the 17th Cannon Fodder Battalion, a distance of approximately 50 kilometers. The enemy could ambush us anywhere, so everyone must be on high alert."
"Understood!" everyone responded in unison.
Just then, a system notification sounded in Lu Ye's mind.
[Trigger Mission: Safely Escort Supplies]
[Mission Description: Assist the squad in safely delivering supplies to Cannon Fodder Camp 17]
[Task Rewards: 300 points, 1 attribute point, unlock attribute cap (current total attributes have reached 27; after unlocking, the cap for each attribute will increase to 20), 1 skill point.]
[Bonus Mission: The team of at least 6 members must safely reach the destination]
[Bonus: 200 points, unlocks the "Quick Reload" passive skill (increases reload speed by 30%).]
Lu Ye's heart skipped a beat: "Great! We must complete the mission no matter what!"
Seryozha glanced at Lu Ye and took the initiative to speak: "After we set off, you will be responsible for observing the left flank, and I will be responsible for the right flank and the front."
Before Lu Ye could speak, Seryozha continued, "Remember, do not fire without authorization when you spot the enemy. First, measure the distance, report the location, and wait for my instructions."
"Understood." Lu Ye nodded. The most important thing for a sniper is to be concealed and coordinated. Acting on their own will only disrupt the rhythm and may even put the entire team in danger.
Dmitry glanced at his watch and said in a deep voice, "After lunch, everyone assemble at the camp entrance to prepare for departure!"
Lunch consisted of simple black bread, canned food, and hot soup.
The team of eight sat around a makeshift table, the atmosphere slightly heavy. Everyone was silently replenishing their energy and reviewing the details of the mission in their minds.
Dmitry finished his bread in a few bites, wiped the grease from the corner of his mouth, and said in a deep voice, "It's almost time. Everyone get on the bus and take your seats according to the arrangement I've made. No one is allowed to change seats without permission."
His gaze swept over everyone, his tone leaving no room for doubt, "In the first car, Victor is driving, I'm in the passenger seat, and Anton, Seryozha, and Lu Ye are in the trunk."
"The second vehicle, Maxim drives, Alexei sets up a light machine gun for defense, Peter assists."
"Understood!" everyone responded in unison and immediately got to work.
After saying this, Dmitry climbed into the passenger seat of the first car and waved his hand, "Go! Maintain a distance of fifty meters, speed of forty kilometers per hour, and report any abnormalities immediately!"
Lu Ye carried Seryozha's spare sniper magazine and observation equipment and climbed into the back of the first vehicle.
The carriage was filled with ammunition boxes and medical supplies, leaving only a narrow passage in the middle for people to pass through.
Seryozha was already seated by the window, carefully wiping his SVD sniper rifle.
"Sit there." Seryozha gestured with his chin towards the seat opposite him. "Good view."
Two transport vehicles covered in camouflage netting drove out of the camp one after another, raising a cloud of dust, heading towards the 17th Cannon Fodder Battalion.
The name "Death Highway" is well-deserved.
This is a dirt road that runs through the eastern Uzbekistan battlefield, with rolling hills and dense shrubs on both sides.
Before the war, this was the main road connecting several villages; now, the road is riddled with shell craters and the wreckage of abandoned vehicles, and the utility poles along the roadside are leaning precariously.
Victor drove the first car very steadily, occasionally reporting road conditions via walkie-talkie.
"There are craters in the road 500 meters ahead. Slow down."
"An abandoned armored vehicle has been spotted on the right; it may contain booby traps. Keep your distance."
Lu Ye carefully observed the terrain outside the car window.
Seryozha also trained him during the journey. Although he had seen many American blockbusters about snipers, this was his first time encountering one in real life, so he listened very attentively.
"A sniper must first learn to observe: wind direction, lighting, terrain, suspicious movements—every detail could be the dividing line between life and death."
Lu Ye nodded from time to time, and occasionally asked questions about things he didn't understand.
After driving for about forty minutes, the convoy entered a relatively flat section of road.
The bushes on both sides thinned out, replaced by an open field where withered corn stalks rustled in the wind.
Just then, Seryozha suddenly spoke up: "Be on guard!"
Lu Ye nodded, noticing that the car was gradually slowing down.
Just then, Victor's voice came over the radio: "Maxim, stop the car!"
The two transport trucks braked almost simultaneously, their tires screeching on the gravel road.
The three people in the trunk heard the driver's seat hitting the trunk heavily.
The moment the car stopped, the three quickly got out and began to guard the area around the vehicle.
Victor opened the car door and cautiously walked to the front of the car, carefully scanning the road ahead and the bushes on both sides. His tone was low and wary: "Captain, something's wrong. This place is too abnormal."
